Creative writing and news from author JP Klein

A quick update

I just wanted to post a short progress update, now that I’ve crossed the 25% of goal mark, to let folks know that work continues.

The pace of progress has slowed somewhat. Some of this is due to changes in my daily routine that were outside my control, and some of this is due to some creative choices I’ve made.

As you may know, I’ve started up a blog again. As explained in the first post on the blog, this was done to give me an additional creative outlet for anything I might wish to create that isn’t related to the novel itself, as well as an additional means of generating interest in my work. So, that has taken up some of the time I might otherwise have devoted to the novel itself.

Another thing that has eaten into my writing time a bit has been some necessary world-building tasks. These tasks contribute to the development of the novel, but aren’t really measured in the word count of the novel. Things like cartography, location and character planning, etc. All essential, but not really measurable in the final product.

That said, the place the novel is currently at is pretty exciting. Our heroes have moved out of their ordinary world now and the adventure has begun in earnest. The possibilities are endless, which can be a bit daunting, but also enticing.

Summer often comes with a myriad of distractions, so progress may continue to be a bit slower than it was at the start. Weirdos keep wanting to go outside and touch grass. But, I will continue to make progress as I can, and will keep the updates coming.

An excerpt:

They were silent as they rode, each lost in their own thoughts. The only sounds around them were the snapping of twigs beneath their horses’ hooves and the low, distant howl of a dying town.
